India and Indonesia Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation in Human Rights
India's Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, met with Indonesia's Minister of Human Rights, Natalius Pigai, in New Delhi on Wednesday to reinforce the bilateral ties between the two nations.
Their discussion, part of the ongoing Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, centered on enhancing cooperation in key areas such as human rights, justice, consular matters, and people-centric governance. In a statement on Twitter, Margherita described the meeting as productive, emphasizing the "shared democratic values" that form the foundation of the "steadfast partnership" between India and Indonesia.
This meeting is the latest in a series of high-level engagements. Earlier in May, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, on the sidelines of the WAVES 2025 summit. Jaishankar highlighted that the creative industry and cultural exchanges are major components of the India-Indonesia partnership.
The foundation for this intensified cooperation was laid in January during a state visit by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who was the Chief Guest for India's 76th Republic Day. The visit, which coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, resulted in the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs). These agreements covered a wide range of fields, including health, digital infrastructure, defence collaboration, and maritime security, while also aiming to strengthen partnerships in energy, critical minerals, science, and technology.
